When Help Feels Too Good to Be True

When people are handed a flyer, invited to join something new, or told about a community project, most people hesitate. Many won’t even read the information. And honestly, that hesitation makes sense.
We’ve all grown up in a world where almost everything comes with a hidden cost, pressure, scam, subscription, gimmick, or disappointment. People have been conditioned to protect themselves emotionally, financially, and mentally. Over time, many people stop believing that something could genuinely exist to help them without taking something from them in return.
The monetized system we live in has deeply shaped how people think and respond. Scarcity has become normal. People are constantly calculating what they can afford, what they must go without, and whether asking for help will make them feel weak, indebted, or vulnerable. Even when people desperately need support, there’s often fear attached to receiving it or asking.
That fear becomes even stronger when strangers are involved. Trust doesn’t come naturally anymore in many communities because people have experienced disappointment, exploitation, rejection, or isolation. So when someone hears about a network where people exchange support, services, knowledge, food, repairs, transportation, childcare, or other contributions through credits instead of money, the first reaction may be skepticism.
“Is this real?”
“What’s the catch?”
“What if I contribute and nobody helps me?”
“What if I trust people and regret it?”
These are understandable fears.
But the Haven for Healing Exchange Network exists because many of us recognize something important: people still want connection, support, purpose, and community. Most people want to help each other. They just no longer know how to safely do it within a system built around limitation and survival.
